What the customer sees

A payment link opens a hosted checkout where the customer enters an available payment method. The business can place it in an invoice, message, email or QR code without building a full online store. The provider handles the sensitive card-entry page rather than the business collecting card details directly.

Some links are created for one customer and amount; others can be reused. Invoice-specific links are easier to reconcile, while reusable links are useful for deposits, events or standard services. Confirm whether a customer can alter the amount and what reference reaches the bank or accounting record.

Fees and settlement

Payment links usually use card-not-present pricing, which can be higher than an in-person tap. A percentage-plus-fixed-fee structure affects small and large payments differently. International cards and currency conversion can add cost.

Check the normal settlement time and the fee for faster access. A low transaction rate can be offset by subscription conditions or slower settlement when the business needs cash immediately.

Security and customer confidence

Use provider-hosted pages with clear branding, HTTPS and suitable fraud controls. The customer should understand who is collecting the payment and receive a reliable receipt. Never request card numbers by ordinary email or text.

For higher-risk or remote sales, review 3D Secure, suspicious-payment controls and the evidence required to challenge a chargeback. Security is not only a technical issue; the wording and appearance of the link also influence whether a customer trusts it.

Choosing a provider

Square and Zeller combine payment links with invoices and in-person payments. Airwallex is attractive when international collection and multiple currencies matter. GoCardless is a bank-payment alternative for recurring collection rather than a direct card-link substitute.

Create a small real transaction before rollout. Test the customer page on a phone, the receipt, settlement record, refund process and accounting reconciliation. That end-to-end test is more valuable than comparing feature lists alone.

Before acting

Provider fees, offers and product terms can change. Confirm the current Australian terms with the provider. This article is general information, not accounting, legal or financial advice.
